Ms Maynard (WA Labor candidate for Swan Hills, who succeeded Jessica Shaw MP at the recent state election held on 8 March 2025) met with SCC Principal Dr Darnelle Pretorius and the senior leaders from the College, discussing all manner of issues ranging from traffic improvements through to academic pathways for young people and enrolment growth at the school on Great Northern Highway in Middle Swan.

The tour took Ms Maynard and the leaders through the Swan Trade Training Centre’s hospitality wing, where ‘Chef Rob’ (Rob Do Carmo – Trade Trainer, Hospitality) was cooking gourmet pizzas with students who are vying for pre-apprenticeships and pathways to positions in hotels, wineries and restaurants.

Dr Pretorius and her team also took the time to show Ms Maynard the Junior School ‘Edu-Dance’ competition performances and the Electrical and Woodwork sections of the Trade Centre.

How should Christian staff in SCEA view the upcoming federal election?
With the Federal election set to take place on 3 May 2025 (less than four weeks from today), the need to understand both state and federal politicians has never been greater for SCEA schools and other faith-based educational institutions.
Christian Schools Australia (CSA) will be holding an event for all Christian teachers across WA schools to inform staff about the issues that Christian schools currently face and how each party plans to approach these issues moving forward.

The event will be held at Swan Christian College on 30 April 2025, with state and federal politicians invited to attend and inform all Christian staff and supporters from across Perth and Western Australia about the upcoming election.
Last year’s event was an amazing time of sharing, and our hope is that Christians who are supportive of independent education in WA will be in attendance and support our politicians from both sides of the aisle during this season.
As a person who works in a SCEA school, why would I care about politicians?
SCEA’s ability to hire Christian staff in all of its schools and the SCEA Head Office cannot be taken for granted. The debate about religious discrimination has dominated discussions over the past two years, and discussions on both sides of parliament are consistently changing regarding potential legislation that would vastly affect our schooling environments. This issue alone threatens our ability to deliver the gospel in our schools.
The map below shows the results of the recent state election and your relevant politicians based on your SCEA school and the SCEA Head Office.

Whatever your political views are, this may be a season in which you choose to pray for our nation’s leaders and for those that God has put in charge of the country’s social, economic and democratic values.
